Blessed Charles the Good was born into both royal dignity and suffering. In 1086, his father, St. Canute, King of Denmark, was martyred while praying in St. Alban's Church in Odense. Charles was only a small child when his father was slain at the altar. His mother brought him to the court of her father, Robert, Count of Flanders, where he was raised in the Christian faith and formed in virtue.
As a young man, Charles was trained as a knight. He accompanied his grandfather on crusade to the Holy Land, where he distinguished himself through courage and discipline. Yet even more notable than his military skill was his deep reverence for God and his concern for justice. Upon returning home, he also aided his uncle in battle against the English, faithfully serving his family and his people.
When Count Robert died, his son Baldwin succeeded him and named Charles as his heir. Baldwin also arranged Charles' marriage to the daughter of the Count of Clermont. During Baldwin's reign, Charles worked closely beside him, and the people of Flanders came to admire Charles for his wisdom, generosity, and personal holiness.
In 1119, upon Baldwin's death, Charles became ruler. As count, he governed with diligence and compassion. He was especially attentive to the poor. During times of famine, he strictly enforced peace and protected the vulnerable. He opposed those who hoarded grain in order to sell it later at crushing prices. His defense of the poor and his insistence on justice angered powerful men who profited from greed.
On March 2, 1127, while Charles was at prayer in the Church of St. Donatian in Bruges, conspirators set upon him and murdered him before the altar. He died as his father had—faithful in prayer, offering his life in service to God and his people.
Blessed Charles the Good is honored as a martyr for justice and charity. His feast day is celebrated on March 2.
May his example remind us that true leadership is rooted not in power, but in holiness, courage, and love for the poor.
