Patriarchate of the East Indies
FREE Catholic Classes
In consequence of an agreement between the Holy See and the Portuguese Government in 1886, settling difficulties that had arisen from the Goan Schism ( see A RCHDIOCESE OF G OA ), the jurisdiction of the Archbishop of Goa was considerably restricted. Indeed, one of the causes of the Schism had been that both the Archbishop of Goa and the Bishop of Macao had been exercising acts of jurisdiction within the vicariates Apostolic of the British East Indies, though these had been already expressly withdrawn from their jurisdiction. The Portuguese Government had sided with the archbishop and his supporters against Rome, claiming a royal jus patronatus over the whole of the Church of India (see PADROADO). As compensation for his shorn jurisdiction the Archbishop of Goa was given the title of patriarch. The suffragan sees of Goa are Damão, Cochin, Macao, Mylapur, and the praelatura nullius of Mozambique .
